Grandview is where the gorge feels biggest. From the Main Overlook the New River lies nearly 1,400 feet down, and two free, year-round trails start right there: the Castle Rock Trail, a strenuous 0.6 mile that ducks under fortress-like cliffs and exposed coal seams before rejoining the rim for a loop of about a mile, and the Grandview Rim Trail, a moderate 1.6 miles one way along the edge to the Turkey Spur lookout. Grandview sits in the southern end of New River Gorge National Park, near Beckley.
How to get to Grandview
Aim for 4700 Grandview Road, Beaver, WV 25813. From Beckley, the Park Service's route is I-64 east about five miles to Exit 129B, a right turn, then Route 9 north for six miles; from Fayetteville, head south on US 19 to Beckley first. Use the street address rather than the park name, since the park warns that map apps can send visitors to rough, inaccessible corners.
Both trails leave from the big Main Overlook lot, with the visitor center and restrooms. Turkey Spur, at the far end of the Rim Trail, has a much smaller lot on a narrow road where the park doesn't recommend extra-large vehicles. RVs can use the large overflow lots, per the park's RV tips, though there are no dedicated RV spaces.
The Grandview Visitor Center is open daily from noon to 5:00 PM through October 25, 2026, then closes until May 27, 2027 (304-763-3715). The overlooks and trails stay open all year.
The Castle Rock loop: short, rugged and worth it
Castle Rock starts near the Main Overlook and drops below the rim, winding past what the Park Service calls "towering fortress-like rock walls and exposed coal seams" and right beneath overhanging cliffs. After 0.6 mile it meets the Rim Trail about half a mile from the overlook, and you stroll back along the edge past its viewpoints, about a mile all told.
Short doesn't mean easy. The park rates it strenuous and doesn't recommend it for young children because of uneven footing and steep drop-offs. Expect roughly 150 to 300 feet of climbing, most of it on the way back up to the rim, and save it for another day if the rock is icy or soaked.
The Rim Trail to Turkey Spur
The Grandview Rim Trail is the longest walk here: 1.6 miles from the Main Overlook to Turkey Spur, 3.2 miles round trip, with about 460 feet of elevation change according to the park's trail-run page. It's rated moderate for a few small, steep hills near the end, and a self-guided brochure covers the first half mile. The finale is Turkey Spur, a sandstone knob you climb on about 150 steps, from the trail or straight up from its own lot.
Budget about an hour and a quarter to two hours round trip; hikers on AllTrails and the Hikes and Hops blog call the Turkey Spur stairs the toughest bit. Don't feel like walking back? The park suggests returning on Turkey Spur Road, or leaving a car at each lot and doing it one way.
More Grandview trails, and which one to pick
Grandview has about six miles of trail in all, "from easy to strenuous," as the park's Grandview trails page puts it. Here's the rest of the lineup.
| Trail | Distance | Rating | Start | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Big Buck | 0.9 mi loop | Easy | Shelter #2 | Forest walk with tree-identification signs; no gorge view |
| Woodland Loop | 0.6 mi loop | Easy | Shelter #2 | A short walk near the restrooms and playground |
| Tunnel | 0.5 mi one-way | Moderate | Main Overlook walkway | Shade and a big rock overhang; the tunnels are closed |
| Little Laurel | 2.6 mi one-way | Strenuous | Shelters 3-4 lot | The roughly 1,400-foot descent to the river, past an old mine and the Royal town site |
With small kids, stick to Big Buck and Woodland Loop. Short on time or energy? The Main Overlook alone takes about 15 minutes, per the park, and it has a viewing platform for wheelchair users, though the 500-yard path from the lot is made of large, uneven stones, according to the accessibility page. And if you're steady on rough ground, Castle Rock is the best short hike here.
Rules at Grandview
Grandview is one of the park's national-park zones, so there's no hunting. The superintendent's compendium bans recreational rock climbing and rappelling here and keeps Grandview Top alcohol-free. Dogs are welcome on every trail on a leash of six feet or less; keep it short on the Castle Rock drop-offs, and see the dogs page for the rest of the park's pet rules.
When to go
Come in late May if you can: Grandview is famous for its Catawba rhododendron, which the Park Service says bloom "around the third week of May." On a clear day the Main Overlook takes in seven miles of the New River and the railroad at Quinnimont, where the first coal shipped out of the gorge in 1873. Fall color is a strong second choice; the fall foliage guide has the timing. After October 25 the visitor center closes for the season, so bring water and snacks, and don't count on indoor restrooms, from late fall to Memorial Day.
Make a day of it, and where to stay nearby
The Grandview overview covers the picnic shelters and summer theater, including Theatre West Virginia's Cliffside Amphitheatre. The trails hub lists every trail in the park with its status, including Glade Creek, the next valley south. Grandview sits just off I-64 east of Beckley, so Beckley's hotels make a handy base for this end of the park; the map here compares places to stay nearby.
