Gauley Fest

Run the Gauley in the morning, dance in a campground at night. The 2026 festival ran September 17 to 20; the next one starts September 16, 2027.

Picture a campground full of kayaks on car roofs, a dam upstream letting loose some of the biggest whitewater in the East, and thousands of paddlers who spend the morning on the river and the night at a dance party. That's Gauley Fest, American Whitewater's four-day festival at Nicholas County Veterans Memorial Park in Summersville, about 30 minutes from downtown Fayetteville. The 2026 edition ran Thursday, September 17 to Sunday, September 20, and the 2027 festival is listed to start Thursday, September 16, 2027, with prices and schedule still to come.

Your admission is a camping wristband rather than a river trip. In 2026 it cost $65 arriving Thursday, $55 Friday or $45 Saturday, covering camping and entertainment through Saturday night; dogs were $20 and anyone 15 or under got in free. The festival doesn't run guided trips, so if you want to raft the Gauley, book that separately with a licensed outfitter.

Status as of September 22, 2026: Gauley Fest 2026 is over. The next festival is listed from Thursday, September 16, 2027; prices, the full schedule and the end date haven't been posted yet. Check the Visit Southern West Virginia's Gauley Fest listing before you go.

What a Gauley Fest weekend looks like

The river comes first, and early. Releases from Summersville Dam started at 6:00 or 7:00 AM on the festival weekend in 2026, per the Army Corps of Engineers' release schedule, with an extra hour of water that weekend, so campers can run the river and be back by evening. American Whitewater bills it as "the largest paddling festival in the world," and West Virginia Tourism says it "draws over 5,000 paddlers."

Back at the park, the afternoons belong to the vendor marketplace (think rows of boats and gear laid out on the grass) and the nights to music. Here's how 2026 ran; 2027 will likely follow the same rhythm.

Gauley Fest 2026 schedule by day, Thursday to Sunday
Day (2026)What was scheduled
ThursdayVendor registration from 10:00 AM; campground opens at noon
FridayGauley release in the early morning (6:00 or 7:00 AM); marketplace opens 5:00 PM; dance party 9:00 to 11:30 PM
SaturdayRelease 6:00 AM; marketplace opens 2:00 PM; silent auction 5:00 to 10:00 PM; live music 7:00 PM to midnight
SundayRelease 6:00 AM; breakdown from 9:00 AM; camping and on-site parking end 11:00 AM

Vendor booths ran $400 (nonprofits $200) and extra wristbands $20. Every dollar goes to American Whitewater's river conservation and access work, so your weekend doubles as a donation to the rivers you're paddling.

Camping, parking and the 7 PM gate

Here's the rule that trips people up: after 7:00 PM on Friday and Saturday, no more vehicles get into the inner festival grounds. Paddlers on Reddit describe the camping as a "free for all" and warn that if you drive out, you may be parking outside when you come back. Set up camp first, figure out re-entry, then head to the river. Families get a quieter area behind the cabins near the main entrance, where quiet hours started at midnight in 2026.

The river side gets crowded too. On the festival Saturday in 2024, American Whitewater's Thomas O'Keefe reported that the Mason's Branch take-out was full by 6:00 AM, the Park Service was letting in "10 cars in at a time with approximately 10 minutes between waves," and the drive to the dam took about an hour. The Park Service's 2026 letter to Gauley boaters says the Mason's Branch road "will close once parking reaches capacity," vehicles blocking roads or parking "will be towed," and Hills to Hills Tour and Shuttle (304-640-8122) is the only permitted commercial shuttle. The free Tailwaters Campground below the dam was closed September 11 to 28, 2026, to free up parking. Early, early, early is the theme.

New to whitewater? The festival is a great place to meet people who know the lines, but a friendly chat at the dam is no substitute for skill, and the Upper Gauley is Class V. For a guided trip, the Park Service sets commercial minimum ages at 16 on the Upper Gauley and 12 to 14 on the Lower, and the Gauley season rafting guide covers outfitters, prices and which section suits you. When is Gauley Fest? Follow the dam

The festival rides the release calendar. "Gauley Season begins the first weekend after Labor Day, and continues for six weekends," the Park Service says, and Gauley Fest takes one of the early ones (the second release weekend in 2026). The 2026 releases ran September 11-14, 18-21, 25-28, October 2-5, 9-12 and 17-18. The 2027 calendar isn't out yet; the river conditions page posts each year's schedule once the Corps publishes it.

Prices, bands and vendors change every year, so check americanwhitewater.org before you drive. Planning a lake day too? Summersville Lake gets drawn down from mid-September (it started September 11 in 2026), and the Summersville Lake day trip lists what's open that time of year. The rest of the fall lineup around the gorge is on the events calendar.

How Gauley Fest started

Gauley Fest began as a victory party. American Whitewater says it "started in 1983 to celebrate the derailment of a hydro-electric project," and it has floated with the release weekends ever since rather than sitting on a fixed date.

The releases themselves are younger than most people guess. The Corps began scheduled Gauley releases in the mid-1980s, and Congress made whitewater recreation an official purpose of the dam in the mid-1980s too (1986 by American Whitewater's account, 1985 by the Park Service's). The Gauley River National Recreation Area followed in 1988.
