Events in Fayetteville and the New River Gorge

BASE jumpers in October, big whitewater in September, fireworks in July and a small town that loves a party all year

Come in October and you can stand on the New River Gorge Bridge while people jump off it. That's Bridge Day, the third Saturday of October (October 17 in 2026), when U.S. 19 closes and the bridge opens to walkers, BASE jumpers and rappellers from 9 AM to 3 PM, per the organizer. The weeks leading up to it are Gauley season, six weekends of scheduled releases from Summersville Dam starting the first weekend after Labor Day, with Gauley Fest in Summersville on one of them. In 2026 the last releases land on October 17 and 18, so paddlers and jumpers share the same big weekend.

The rest of the year has an easygoing, small-town rhythm. Fayetteville throws its Heritage Festival and Fourth of July fireworks, fills Court Street for First Friday evenings in the warmer months, and keeps winter lively with themed weekends listed by the Fayetteville visitors bureau. Trail runners line up at the courthouse and the gorge resorts (Active Southern West Virginia lists most races), Theatre West Virginia plays outdoor summer shows at Grandview, and Oak Hill, Beckley, Summersville and Hinton, each within about an hour, host festivals of their own. Dates shift every year, so every event here links straight to its organizer.
