The case for the Upper Gauley

American Whitewater's Upper Gauley page gives the reach as 12 miles from the base of the dam to Woods Ferry. The same page's text describes a 9.8-mile run from the dam to Mason's Branch, ACE also says 12 miles, and Adventures on the Gorge says 11. Where a trip takes out accounts for most of the spread.

Outfitters count five Class V rapids on the Upper: Insignificant, Pillow Rock, Lost Paddle, Iron Ring and Sweet's Falls. The Park Service's Gauley page describes "class III to V+ drops in steep, turbulent chutes such as Pillow Rock, Iron Ring and Sweet's Falls." American Whitewater rates three of them lower. It keeps Insignificant and Lost Paddle at V but puts Pillow Rock and Iron Ring at IV+ and Sweet's Falls at IV.

Four outfitters describe who the Upper is for, and none of them pitches it to first-timers. Adventures on the Gorge says "Not recommended for beginners" and requires that guests can swim, while New & Gauley River Adventures lists "Experience level: Required." ACE says "Previous experience is highly recommended," wants "strong swimmers and in good physical condition," and on its trip page calls the day "a full-day, physically demanding experience." River Expeditions recommends "Previous Adventure Class rafting experience."

On age, the sources split. The Park Service's minimum for the Upper is 16, and New & Gauley and West Virginia Adventures list the same. ACE and Adventures on the Gorge sell their one-day Upper trips at 15 (ACE's 12-foot raft upgrade requires 18), yet the Adventures on the Gorge FAQ, after listing the Gauley at 15 and up, adds "Upper Gauley age 16+ for extreme trips."

American Whitewater is blunt about the undercut rocks. Its reach page describes Initiation as a "deadly sieve on the right side ... two have drowned in it," warns of a "risk of flush drowning" at Lost Paddle, and records "one drowning and several near misses" at Conestoga Wagon below Tumblehome. Shipwreck Rock, also called Table Rock, is "severely undercut," with "at least two rafting passenger deaths."

Two people died in the first days of the 2023 season, WV MetroNews reported. On September 7 a 62-year-old Richmond, Virginia man died at Iron Ring when a three-person raft flipped on a private trip "during a training day for rafting guides." Two days later a 63-year-old woman from Monterey, Virginia fell from a commercial raft near Shipwreck Rock; the dam's flow was cut in an emergency reduction, and divers recovered her body on September 18. The news searches behind this page, run September 8, 2026, turned up no reported Gauley deaths from 2024 on, but American Whitewater's accident listing returned an error, so that is an absence of reports rather than a clean record.

During scheduled releases the Park Service runs "daily EMS and SAR river patrols" carrying defibrillators, and it "may request reduced flows from Summersville Dam," according to the 2026 Park Service briefing as American Whitewater republished it.

The case for the Lower Gauley

American Whitewater's Lower Gauley page measures 14 miles from Woods Ferry to Swiss at Class III-IV(V). The Park Service calls it "a 12-mile stretch, rated class III to V that feels like a watery roller coaster." Adventures on the Gorge says 13 miles. ACE gives 11.5 on its Gauley overview and "more than 10 miles" on its trip page. American Whitewater also lists Bucklick, a historic put-in about three miles below Woods Ferry, which may account for part of the gap.

The Park Service gives the Lower's minimum age as "12-14," a range rather than a single number. ACE, Adventures on the Gorge and New & Gauley all list 12, and New & Gauley's small-boat Lower Wildside trip requires 16. West Virginia Adventures and River Expeditions publish no age for a one-day Lower trip.

Rated lower does not mean easy. American Whitewater rates Upper Mash, Lower Mash, Heaven's Gate and Pure Screaming Hell at Class IV, calls the undercut at Koontz Flume the "site of at least one fatality," and says the hole at Pure Screaming Hell "tends to shove the unwary paddler into a sieve on river right."

The case for both sections, your own boat, or neither

Both sections in a day, or two days

Several companies sell a longer day. Adventures on the Gorge's Marathon covers "nearly 24 miles" of both sections in 6 to 8 hours at age 16, and the company counts five Class V rapids on the Upper and three on the Lower. Its Deluxe Overnight runs the Upper, camps at Canyon Doors with "wood-fired hot tubs," and runs the Lower the next day; guests bring their own tent and sleeping bag. ACE's Marathon listing showed $89.50, less than half of any other marathon price on file, so it may be a deposit or a partial rate. Treat it as unconfirmed until ACE quotes it.

Your own boat

Private boaters get the same water and a thicket of rules. The Park Service's 2026 letter to Gauley boaters provides "A 15-minute unloading zone ... near the bathrooms" and says "do not stage boats in parking spaces." At Mason's Branch, "The access road will close once parking reaches capacity," and vehicles blocking roads or lots "will be towed." The letter also bans "Jumping into or boarding another boater's craft without permission," and the briefing says rangers have had "increased complaints of disorderly conduct and unauthorized boarding of other watercraft" at Pillow Rock and Sweet's Falls, which "may result in citations or arrest."

American Whitewater's Gauley project page says Mason's Branch is closed to private vehicles on Saturdays and Sundays in season, with private parking in the upper lot on Fridays and Mondays, and that the group leases Legg Field above it for weekend overflow, a steep quarter-mile carry. The 2026 briefing adds that the road generally opens to private vehicles "around 1:00 p.m. after commercial bus traffic decreases." On Gauley Fest Saturday in 2024, Thomas O'Keefe wrote in an American Whitewater trip report, the Mason's Branch lot was full by 6 a.m., the Park Service let "10 cars in at a time with approximately 10 minutes between waves," and reaching the dam took about an hour.

For the shuttle, the letter names Hills to Hills Tour and Shuttle as "the only NPS-permitted commercial shuttle" and warns that "using unauthorized services may violate federal law." Hills to Hills lists a Swiss to Wood's Ferry route and a Mason's Branch to dam route, with no prices. The Park Service's directions reach Mason's Branch from US 19 by taking WV 129 west 9.9 miles to Poe, then Panther Mountain Road (County Route 22) for 3.7 miles, then a left for 1.1 miles; Wood's Ferry is 2.1 miles farther on Panther Mountain Road.

Neither, this fall

Some groups belong on a different river. American Whitewater's Upper New page calls that stretch "a good run for those who don't feel up to either the Upper or Lower Gauley at fall release levels." The Gauley itself also runs outside the release weekends: River Expeditions sells a Summer Gauley trip from Memorial Day to Labor Day, listed from $145 on September 8, 2026, and New & Gauley warns that "Spring Gauley can run at water levels that are much higher than fall releases."

Release days and prices for 2026

The Army Corps of Engineers runs Summersville Dam. Its 2026 Whitewater Schedule of Releases, updated September 4, 2026, sets a target flow of 2,800 cfs for every window, and the Park Service's Gauley page lists the same six windows. In a 2019 WV MetroNews story the Corps' C.J. Hamilton called 2,800 cfs "the best level for the commercial rafting industry." The schedule can change, and has. In September 2018, WV MetroNews reported, high water pushed the release "from 2,800 CFS to 10,000 CFS."

Notes on the Corps page add an hour of release on September 19 to 21 for Gauley Fest (the table already shows the longer hours) and put Bridge Day on October 17, the Saturday of the last release weekend. In October, on days without a whitewater release, the Corps says it will provide 750 cfs all day for fishing. Release-day gage height below the dam shows on the river conditions page.

One Park Service document ends the season a day early. Its letter to Gauley boaters gives the 2026 boating season as "September 11-October 17, 2026," while the Corps table and the Park Service's own whitewater page both run releases on October 17 and 18. This page follows the Corps.

Sources disagree on how many release days a season holds: Wikipedia says "22 controlled releases" and West Virginia Explorer "22 scheduled days." American Whitewater's project page says a 1986 law, with language introduced by Congressman Nick Rahall, required "20 scheduled releases"; the Park Service's Gauley timeline puts "Congress added recreation to Summersville Dam's authorized purposes" in 1985 instead. The Corps' own descriptions from 2019 and 2025, five four-day weekends plus two two-day weekends, would come to 24. The 2026 table prints no total.

Crowd figures depend on who is counted. The e-WV encyclopedia says "approximately 20,000 raft during the 22-day fall dam release season," and West Virginia Tourism's August 25, 2026 release expects "more than 60,000 visitors," a count of people rather than rafters. West Virginia Explorer's 2026 preview quotes River Expeditions' Skip Heater saying reservations are "probably up about 10%."

Gauley Fest, American Whitewater's fundraiser, runs September 17 to 20, 2026 at Nicholas County Veterans Memorial Park in Summersville. American Whitewater's festival page lists 2026 admission at $65 from Thursday night, which covers camping on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, $55 from Friday night and $45 from Saturday night. Kids 15 and under get in free; dogs are a $20 flat fee.

Camping on release weekends

Gauley Tailwaters Campground at the dam has 18 drive-in sites with no camping fee, by the Park Service's count; American Whitewater's reach page calls it "a small 12 site campground." Either way it is shut for the first three release weekends of 2026. The 2026 briefing says Battle Run Campground and private campgrounds stay open. For other options, see the camping guide.

What the trips cost, as listed

Read every price here as a floor on the date shown, not a quote. Adventures on the Gorge is the only company that labels its Gauley figures 2026. ACE, River Expeditions and West Virginia Adventures print "starting" or "from" prices with no year, and New & Gauley's pages still showed 2025 prices for the Upper and 2024 prices for the Lower when they were captured.

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources outfitter list shows seven licensed rafting companies with Fayette or Raleigh County addresses: the six in the table plus Alpine Ministries, whose Gauley trips were not captured. Its second page adds Precision Rafting Expeditions of the Gauley River, based in Friendsville, Maryland, and this page has no trip details for it.

New & Gauley's policies are stricter for the Gauley than for the New: a 50% deposit, the balance due 45 days out and no refund inside 45 days, against a full refund minus a 15% processing fee for New River trips cancelled 30 days out. No source used here gives company-level safety records, so this page does not rank the outfitters on safety; the rafting company comparison lines up what each one publishes about cancellations and photos.

The plain recommendation

Book the Lower Gauley unless everyone in the raft is 16 or older and has rafted Class IV water before. The reasoning: the Park Service puts the Upper's floor at 16, every outfitter that describes the Upper's audience asks for experience or warns off beginners, and American Whitewater's record of drownings at undercut rocks is longer for the Upper than for the Lower. No source gives injury rates by section, so this is a judgment from the published rules and hazard notes, not a statistic.

With a 15-year-old in the group, call before paying. ACE and Adventures on the Gorge list 15 on their Upper trip pages, but the Park Service says 16 and Adventures on the Gorge's own FAQ says 16 for extreme trips.

Experienced rafters watching the budget should price a Friday or a Monday. New & Gauley's 2025 rates charged $20 less for a one-day Upper trip on those days than on Saturday or Sunday; whether that holds for 2026, or anywhere else, is a question for the booking call. The final weekend has no Friday or Monday release at all, and its Saturday is also Bridge Day.
