Where to stay near the New River Gorge

Brick-street inns, cabins with hot tubs, rafting resorts and free riverside campsites. Here's how to pick yours.

For a first trip, stay in Fayetteville or just across the bridge in Lansing. You'll be about a mile from the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, a few minutes from the outfitters and trailheads, and in downtown's case, a short stroll from dinner and a local beer. Want something different? Oak Hill and Beckley bring chain-hotel prices, Hico hides cabins with private hot tubs, Summersville is home base for Gauley season and Hinton puts you at the quiet south end of the park.

The park itself has no lodge or hotel, so every bed is in the towns around it or at a campsite, and there are plenty to choose from: Visit Fayetteville's lodging directory lists 81 places, 74 of them homes and rentals. The prices below are starting rates each place published in 2026, so treat them as a floor and check your own dates on the map.

Is downtown Fayetteville the best place to stay?

For most people, yes, and it just got better. Hill Hall Hotel opened on August 28, 2026 inside the town's old high school and middle school at 135 High Street, with 40 rooms, a restaurant called Patsy's and free parking. Rates start from $225 a night, and dogs are welcome for $50 per dog per night, two at most. Town leaders had been hoping for a boutique hotel in that old school for years, and now you can sleep in one a few blocks from Court Street.

Prefer something with creaky-floor character? The Historic Morris Harvey House Inn at 201 West Maple Avenue has five rooms and suites in a historic house, listed at $179 to $239, with no pets. Guests praise it as walkable and well kept; just know there are stairs, sound carries the way it does in any old house, and the two cheapest rooms share a bathroom. Lafayette Flats, at 171 North Court Street in a restored bank building, rents four apartment suites aimed at adults, with no pets and quiet hours from 10 p.m.

Then there are the rentals, about 100 of them inside town limits by the town's own count, many in homes a few minutes' walk from the restaurants. The one real catch downtown is parking, which the town itself calls "particularly troublesome" on Court Street. Pick a rental with its own driveway and you won't be circling for a space at 7 p.m.

Out on U.S. 19, the Quality Inn New River Gorge at 103 Elliotts Way is the budget pick inside town limits, at about $97 to $107 on ordinary 2026 dates; pets pay $15 each per night, three at most. Guests like the location, the staff and the breakfast, less so the dated carpets and bathrooms. One tip for every listing: a Fayetteville address doesn't always mean in town. Places on Gatewood Road, Laurel Creek Road and Fayette Station Road are out in the country, lovely but not walkable to Court Street.

Staying in Lansing, across the bridge

Lansing sits at the north end of the bridge, about 3 miles and five minutes from downtown, with the Canyon Rim Visitor Center practically next door. The big name here is Adventures on the Gorge at 219 Chestnutburg Road, a rafting resort owned by Aramark since July 2024. Its lodging comes in seven tiers, from rustic cabins at $129 (bring your own linens and pillows; the bathhouse is shared) up to a four-bedroom Cabin on the Gorge at $519, going by 2026 starting rates. Reviewers love the guides and the setting and are tougher on the cabins, some of which feel small or tired for the price, so book it for the river trips rather than the decor.

Two cabin companies share Milroy Grose Road. New River Gorge Cabins is refreshingly upfront with prices: three-bedroom cabins at $180 a weeknight and $190 a weekend night for two guests, $215 every night from September 4 to October 16 (its Gauley and Bridge Day window), $30 per extra person, a $55 cleaning fee and a two-night minimum all year. GPS tends to misroute guests, so enter 1153 Milroy Grose Road. Mill Creek Luxury Cabins next door sets a two-night minimum from May 20 to October 20 and books through Vrbo.

Climbers, this one's yours. The American Alpine Club campground at 97 Pudds Road charges $25 for a private site ($35 for nonmembers), $12 or $15 for communal tenting and $18 or $22 for a van, plus tax, in 2026. On Bridge Day, Lansing guests use the north shuttle lots at Smales Branch Road and Midland Trail High School.

Cabins near New River Gorge: Hico and Victor

Picture a hot tub on a wooded deck after a day on the river: that's Hico, about 8 miles and 11 minutes north on U.S. 19, and it's cabin country. Country Road Cabins at 1508 Sunday Road rents one- to four-bedroom cabins with kitchens and private hot tubs, from about $187 to $458 in 2026, and guests rate it 4.8 out of 5 across 232 TripAdvisor reviews, mostly for privacy and cleanliness. Opossum Creek Retreat in Victor has eight cabins and houses and takes dogs in selected cabins for $25 a day; call or book online for rates.

On a tighter budget, New River Cabins and Tiny Houses lists tiny houses at $129 Sunday to Wednesday and $139 Thursday to Saturday from May 9 to October 16, with no pets in the tiny houses and Bridge Day bookings by phone only. West Virginia Adventures' Base Camp cabins are $75 a night year-round, but they're bunk huts with no power or water, and every rental adds a $125 cleaning fee. Cell signal fades on the cabin roads, so screenshot your door code before you turn off U.S. 19.

Oak Hill, Minden and ACE Adventure Resort

Oak Hill is 6.5 miles south, about 11 minutes, and it's where you'll find the county's supermarkets and bigger stores. It's also home to ACE Adventure Resort at 1 Concho Road on the Minden side, a full-on basecamp with "over 50 different" cabins plus tents, bunkhouses and a mountaintop campground. Camping runs $15 a person and a cabin tent $79; in September, Blackwater Getaway cabins for four were showing from $249 and log homes up to $729 with a seasonal discount. Plan on two nights: ACE requires them on Friday and Saturday stays from Memorial Day weekend through Halloween, which covers every Gauley weekend and Bridge Day.

Just want a clean hotel room near the groceries? Comfort Inn New River at 801 Mall Road ran about $120 to $139 in 2026. Holiday Lodge at 340 Oyler Avenue has about 120 rooms, last renovated in 1999, and reviewers (about 3.2 out of 5) mention dated rooms. River Expeditions at 900 Broadway Avenue sells a Bridge Day Weekend Blowout: three nights of camping and light breakfast bundled with rafting, $165 to $310 a person. The closest south-side Bridge Day shuttle lot is Oak Hill High School.

Fayetteville vs Beckley: when the drive is worth it

Beckley, 20 to 25 miles and about 30 minutes south on U.S. 19, has the region's biggest lineup of chain hotels, clustered around I-64/I-77 Exit 44 on Harper Road. In 2026 Choice rooms ran from $85 for members at Clarion Pointe to $135 at Comfort Inn, and the Courtyard was about $149 before tax in late August (no pets there). Hampton Inn takes up to two pets for $50 on stays of one to four nights.

Beckley shines for late interstate arrivals, hotel points and days at Grandview or the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. It's less fun for a morning Lower New put-in or a sunrise at Long Point, when that half hour each way starts to sting. Coming for Bridge Day? The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels sells an October 16 to 18 package from $140 per person per night, plus tax and resort fee, with breakfast and a shuttle to the event gate.

Hawks Nest State Park Lodge and Ansted

Want to wake up to the gorge outside your window? The lodge at Hawks Nest State Park, 49 Hawks Nest Park Road in Ansted, is the closest thing the gorge has to a park lodge, about 11.6 miles and 21 minutes from downtown. It has about 30 rooms with canyon or forest views, plus two pet rooms for animals under 50 pounds at $40. Standard rooms ran about $201 to $218 in 2026. Past guests all give the same advice: ask for a canyon-facing room by name.

The park's nature center is closed until its new aerial tram is finished, so if the tram is part of your plan, call the lodge at 304-658-5212 first.

Babcock State Park cabins

Babcock is the one for a cabin by a rushing creek at state-park prices, with the much-photographed Glade Creek Grist Mill in the same park. Babcock State Park in Clifftop, about 20 miles southeast of the bridge, has 28 cabins with Wi-Fi, appliances and linens, 13 of them along Glade Creek. Pets are allowed in cabins 1-2, 9, 12-15, 17-18 and 24-27. Check-in is 4 p.m. and checkout 10 a.m.; call the cabin line at 304-438-3003 for rates. Some older creek cabins sit up to 65 steps down, and the two deluxe cabins are the accessible ones. The 52-site campground opens the third Friday in April and closes the fourth Monday in October, with a two-night minimum on weekends.

Where to stay for Gauley season: Summersville

Rafting the Gauley? Sleep near the put-in. Summersville is about 24 miles and 30 minutes north, beside Summersville Lake, and the dam is where Gauley season starts. The 2026 release weekends still to come after September 22 are September 25-28, October 2-5 and 9-12, and October 17-18. The free 18-site Gauley Tailwaters Campground under the dam is closed September 11 to 28, 2026.

The Corps of Engineers' Battle Run Campground at 2981 Summersville Lake Road is open May 1 to Columbus Day, bans pets and runs about $24 for a tent site to $34 with electric (up to $40 on Recreation.gov). Summersville Lake State Park opened three newer campgrounds in May 2025; check its site for rates. The Gauley season guide has everything else you need for the river.

Hinton, for the south end of the park

Hinton is the gateway town people forget, and that's half its charm. At almost 50 miles and about 70 minutes from Fayetteville, it's too far for a bridge-end base and perfect for Sandstone Falls, the biggest waterfall on the New River, nine miles up River Road from the WV 20 bridge in town. Bluestone State Park at 2104 Bluestone Park Road (304-466-2805) rents cabins and runs campgrounds open "spring through fall, weather permitting." Driving in on I-64 eastbound before late October 2026? The Exit 139 ramp at Sandstone is closed, so plan on a 10 to 12 minute turnaround from Exit 143.

Free camping in New River Gorge National Park

Yes, free. "There are no camping fees at park campgrounds," the NPS camping page says, and "all sites are first-come, first-serve." All but one of the eight free campgrounds sit by the river, and every site is primitive, with no drinking water, hookups or electricity, so pack accordingly. Bringing a crowd? The Burnwood group site across from Canyon Rim costs $75 for groups of eight or more; reserve by phone at (304) 465-6517. After the August 15 and 16 floods, Brooklyn Campground has reopened and one lane of Cunard Road is open. The camping guide compares every site, plus the private campgrounds with showers and hookups.

Status as of September 22, 2026: Gauley Tailwaters Campground is closed September 11 to 28, 2026. NPS campgrounds take no reservations; call the park at 304-465-0508 for flood-related road status. Check the NPS letter to Gauley boaters before you go.

Booking for Bridge Day and Gauley weekends

Bridge Day falls on the third Saturday in October, October 17 in 2026, and it's the busiest lodging weekend of the year in Fayetteville. The town's 2026 guide warns that hotels, rentals and campgrounds fill quickly, and plenty of visitors book as early as July, when BASE jumper registration opens. If you've got your heart set on that weekend, book now.

Then pick your side of the gorge. U.S. 19 closes at 7 a.m. and reopens at 5 p.m., so you're on one side for the whole day. Book on the side of your shuttle lot: Lansing and Hico guests use the north lots; downtown, Oak Hill and Beckley guests use the south ones. Shuttles are $5 cash, and pets aren't permitted at the event. The Bridge Day guide has the lot addresses.

Watch for minimum stays, too. ACE requires two nights on Friday and Saturday through Halloween; Mill Creek two nights through October 20; New River Gorge Cabins two nights all year at $215 a night through Gauley season, and it may require up to five at peak. Many rentals only reveal an event minimum once you enter the dates, so search October 16 to 18 directly.

What a vacation rental costs near Fayetteville

Rentals are the biggest slice of the market here, and prices swing with size and season. In September 2026, Airbnb showed about 170 rentals around Fayetteville averaging $142 to $178 a night before taxes and fees, and Vrbo about 298 once you add Hico, Lansing, Victor and Ansted. Guests actually paid a median of $199 a night (mean $256) between August 2025 and July 2026, according to AirROI. Fayette County adds a 6% hotel occupancy tax. The cabins and rentals guide goes company by company.

So where should you stay?

Book two or three nights downtown and you can't go far wrong, especially now that Hill Hall gives you a proper hotel within walking distance of dinner. Rafting with Adventures on the Gorge or ACE? Stay at the resort, where river check-in is on the same property; you're paying for the convenience more than the cabin finish. Traveling as a group of six or more, a Hico or Lansing cabin usually wins, with one kitchen and one hot tub for everyone. Beckley is the fallback when everything nearer is gone, and on Bridge Day weekend it may be all that's left, so choose your side of the gorge first and the bed second.

Still sorting the drive? Getting here covers the U.S. 19 road work and the airports, and the stays section has full profiles of the resorts, cabins and campgrounds.
