October is the gorge's best month, and it isn't close. The hardwoods on both walls go red, orange and gold all the way down to the river, the rust-colored bridge arch suddenly looks like it was painted to match and the first cold nights put a snap in the air. Color here usually peaks between mid-October and early November, and WV Explorer's 2026 foliage guide expects mid to late October around the gorge, Babcock and Fayetteville, with the rim turning before the river.
That puts Bridge Day, Saturday, October 17, 2026, right in the thick of it: great for the view, rough on parking. If you're planning now, pick a weekend in the second half of October, book your bed early, and check the state's weekly leaf map in the days before you drive.
When will the leaves peak in 2026?
Nobody publishes an official peak date for the gorge, so here's what the forecasters are saying for this year.
Published 2026 fall foliage forecasts for the New River Gorge area, by source and date | Forecast | Published | What it means for the gorge |
| WV Explorer 2026 foliage guide | August 13, 2026; updated September 22 | New River Gorge, Babcock and Fayetteville: mid to late October. Charleston and the lower Kanawha Valley: late October. |
| WCHS on the state map | August 19, 2026 | Central West Virginia from the end of September into mid-October; the southwest in late October and early November. |
| WV Explorer on the state map | August 19, 2026; updated September 22 | Color starts in the high Alleghenies, then "Farther south, fall color eventually reaches the New River Gorge." |
| WV Tourism park page | Standing guidance | "between mid-October and early November" |
For up-to-the-week reports, sign up for the state's emails on its fall map page; the weekly updates go out from mid-September.
Weather can nudge the calendar. A dry summer tends to bring earlier leaf drop and duller color, as WDTV reported in the 2024 drought, while a long warm spell holds the color back. After a dry September, lean early rather than late.
Why the rim turns before the river
The gorge is deep enough to hold two seasons at once. The trees on the rim change first, and the slopes hundreds of feet down along the New River follow. The Main Overlook at Grandview sits 1,400 feet above the water, the river is almost 1,000 feet below the Endless Wall, and Sandstone Falls Overlook is 600 feet up, so you can watch the season walk downhill.
That's handy if you arrive a bit late. When the overlooks look past their best, head down: Fayette Station, Thurmond and the Sandstone Falls boardwalk sit at river level and often hold color longer.
Your fall calendar, late September to early November
Leaves aren't the only thing on the October schedule. The same weeks bring Gauley rafting weekends, Bridge Day, hunting seasons and the first seasonal closures, so here's how 2026 lines up.
Fall calendar for the New River Gorge, late September to early November 2026: forecast color and other events | When | The leaves | Also happening |
| Late September | Color starts in the high Alleghenies; the gorge is still mostly green | Gauley releases September 25 to 28; deer and bear archery opens in the preserve September 26 |
| October 1 to 12 | Central West Virginia turning; the gorge usually not yet | Gauley weekends October 2 to 5 and 9 to 12; Hinton Railroad Days October 9 to 11; fall turkey season October 10 to 18 |
| October 13 to 20 | The gorge window opens; in 2023, peak color was expected right on Bridge Day | Bridge Day, October 17, with U.S. 19 closed 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; last Gauley releases October 17 and 18; youth deer and youth bear seasons October 17 and 18; median first freeze at Oak Hill October 19 |
| October 21 to 31 | Still in the mid-to-late window; the southwest keeps turning into late October | Thurmond Depot's last 2026 weekend is October 24 and 25; Grandview Visitor Center closes for the season from October 26 (the overlooks stay open); the eastbound I-64 Exit 139 ramp stays closed "through late October" |
| Early November | The tail end of the mid-October to early November range | Cunard Road closes below the Brooklyn Mine Trail from November through March; bare ridgelines start to show the rock |
How past falls played out
A few years of forecasts and reports point the same way: the second half of October is the safer bet.
Fall color timing in the New River Gorge in earlier years, by year and source | Year | Who said it | What they said |
| 2023 | MetroNews, October 18 | Foliage expected "at its peak in color" for Bridge Day (October 21); a park district supervisor said "It usually coincides with the fall colors." |
| 2023 | WCHS, October 23 | Peak expected "in late October, early November" for the panhandles and the southwest. |
| 2024 | WVVA, August 5 | Southern West Virginia would "likely see its peak in foliage color in mid-October to early November." |
| 2024 | WV Cabins, a local lodging company | The state parks along the New River usually peak in the second week of October, earlier than the state forecasts. |
| 2025 | WV Explorer, September 4 | "Late October to early November: Southern counties and lower hills." |
| 2025 | WVPB via LPM, October 10 | High spots such as Davis and Lost River were in full color while lower elevations were still green. |
| 2025 | WV Explorer, October 16 | "Later in the season (mid-to-late October), the rim roads and overlooks of the gorge offer sweeping views of fall color deep into the valleys." |
Those green valleys on October 10, 2025 are the best argument against coming in the first week of the month for the gorge itself.
Where to see fall color around Fayetteville
Start at Canyon Rim Visitor Center, the easy one. A boardwalk runs from the building to an upper deck with an accessible ramp, then 178 steps drop to a lower deck where the bridge arch sits framed against the color. It's open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. State paving work may close the U.S. 19 entrance at times this fall, so give yourself a few spare minutes.
Willing to walk a little? Long Point puts you face to face with the bridge across a gorge full of color, and Diamond Point on the Endless Wall Trail looks up and down the river from the cliff top. Both lots are small and fill fast on color weekends (the Park Service says the Fern Creek lot "frequently fills up"), so be parked before mid-morning.
Grandview, near Beaver off I-64, is the big one: the Main Overlook hangs 1,400 feet over a sweeping bend of the river. The visitor center closes for the season from October 26, 2026, but the overlooks stay open, and there's no hunting in the Grandview area.
North of town, the stone overlook at Hawks Nest State Park is a 160-yard paved loop from the lot, and the lodge next door sits on a cliff 750 feet above the river, per the West Virginia Encyclopedia. Babcock State Park and its grist mill, turn on roughly the same schedule as the gorge. Farther south, Sandstone Falls Overlook on WV 20 looks 600 feet down on the whole width of the falls.
Rather see it from the car? The Park Service's central circuit around the park is about 83 miles and three hours without long stops. The Midland Trail, U.S. 60 west from Hico through Ansted to Gauley Bridge, rolls past Hawks Nest and Cathedral Falls, and the Midland Trail day trip has the stops. Fayette Station Road, the narrow eight-mile switchback to the bottom of the gorge and back, passes under the bridge at river level when it's open (see the notice below). For every viewpoint side by side, see the best overlooks guide.
Tips for an October trip
Plan around Bridge Day. On Saturday, October 17, 2026, U.S. 19 and the bridge close to traffic from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., says the official Bridge Day site, and it's traditionally the busiest lodging weekend of the year. Love a festival? Come for it and book now. Just want the leaves? The weekend after, October 24 and 25, falls inside every 2026 forecast window and is far calmer.
Status as of September 22, 2026: Two river-level drives were closed after the August 15 and 16 flash floods: Fayette Station Road from Teays Landing to the two-way section, and Glade Creek Road beyond the Grandview Sandbar campground. No reopening had been announced as of September 22, so check the park's closures page before you plan a drive on either. Check the
NPS closures page before you go.
You'll share the preserve with hunters in color season. Deer and bear archery runs from September 26, fall turkey from October 10 to 18, and youth deer and youth bear seasons land on Bridge Day weekend, October 17 and 18. There's no hunting at Grandview, Sandstone Falls, Thurmond or the lower gorge, and the Park Service recommends blaze orange on preserve trails; the park's hunting-area maps show which is which, and wildlife and safety has the rest.
Heading south to Sandstone? The eastbound I-64 Exit 139 ramp has been closed since April 1 for bridge work and should stay closed "through late October," WVVA reported. Eastbound, carry on about four miles to Exit 143 and double back, roughly 10 to 12 extra minutes. Hinton and Sandstone has the route.
Pack a real jacket. Nights get cold sooner than people expect, and the median first freeze at Oak Hill is October 19. Phones also drop out below the rim, so download the Park Service app content before you leave town.
Where to stay for leaf season
For color, aim at the weekends of October 17 and October 24, and remember that beds near the gorge go first around Bridge Day. Staying close means you can be at an overlook for the first light on the color, before the day-trippers arrive. The where to stay guide compares Fayetteville, Lansing and Oak Hill, and the map here shows what's open for your dates. For the rest of the year month by month, see the best time to visit. Waterfalls, wildlife and the gorge's ancient rock are in the New River Gorge nature guide.
