At Secret Sandwich Society the sandwiches are named for presidents, the pickles, chips and ketchup are made in-house, and the bar keeps the cocktails coming. It sits at 103 Keller Avenue in downtown Fayetteville, a few steps off Court Street. Summer hours run 11 AM to 9 PM Sunday through Thursday and 11 AM to 10 PM on Friday and Saturday; call 304-574-4777 or 304-574-4779. The building burned in November 2020 and reopened, rebuilt, in 2023.
What to order at Secret Sandwich Society
Pick a president. The 2026 menu puts ham, white cheddar, apple and rosemary mayo on the Washington ($14.50), and turkey, peach jam, blue cheese spread and crispy onions on the Truman ($14.50). The Hoover stacks fried chicken with honey butter and Swiss ($16), and vegetarians get the Fillmore, built on fried eggplant ($14.50). Sandwiches come with house chips and a pickle. Burgers run $14.50 to $16.50, and the pimento fries ($8) are the side the restaurant can't stop talking about.
West Virginia Tourism notes the house-made pickles, chips and ketchup, and TripAdvisor reviewers are most consistent about two things: the sandwiches and the drinks. The complaints are about peak-hour crowds and slower service, not the food, so a late lunch is the easy win.
Figure on $14 to $16 a sandwich before a drink. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 PM. Groups should know the kitchen splits a table into up to six checks and may add a 20 percent service charge for parties of eight or more.
Hours change with the seasons
The restaurant keeps longer hours from April 1 through the warm months, then pulls back an hour in winter "to match the pace of our town," as its winter-hours post puts it: 11 AM to 8 PM Sunday through Thursday and 11 AM to 9 PM on Friday and Saturday. It doesn't announce the switch date ahead of time, so from late fall into March, call before planning a late dinner.
The fire and the comeback
In November 2020 fire destroyed the restaurant and the music venue next to it. Nearly three years later it was back: WCHS reported the reopening and WVNS covered the official reopening day, both as local headline news.
This is David Bailey's second act. He co-founded Pies and Pints on West Maple Avenue in 2003 before building Secret Sandwich Society, as the Fayette Tribune told it. The idea has traveled, too: there are now locations in Morgantown, West Virginia, and Richmond, Virginia. Fayetteville is the original.
Where to park for Secret Sandwich Society
The restaurant asks nicely and in writing: "Be mindful of our neighbors. Please park in front of our restaurant or on Court Street." The lots around it belong to the neighbors, and parking is one of the sore spots visitors mention, so honor the request on a busy Saturday night.
Kids, groups and Give Back Nights
Kids get their own menu: grilled cheese, a cheeseburger, PB and J, ham and cheese or chicken strips, all with chips and apple slices. More family-friendly ideas are in the New River Gorge with kids. The restaurant doesn't say whether it takes reservations, so call ahead for a big group, especially on rafting-season weekends.
Once a month it holds a Give Back Night from 4 PM to close, when 10 percent of sales goes to a local cause. On September 30, 2026 the money goes to the West Virginia Rivers Coalition, which is a nice way to thank the river you just paddled.
Nearby
The Court Street cafes and the tap house on the corner of South Court are a short stroll away. Water Stone Outdoors on Wiseman Avenue pours coffee and beer in its Brew Garden and is one of the gear shops in town.
