Fayette County Farmers Market (Fayetteville)
Saturday-morning producers' market in the courthouse lot from late spring until cold weather (mid-May to mid-October per one listing). A Thursday 2:00-6:00 PM market runs at the Rick Rutledge Pavilion, 1400 Virginia Street, Oak Hill. SNAP/EBT, WIC FMNP and senior vouchers accepted; bring cash as a fallback.
Gauley Season Dam Releases
Scheduled releases from Summersville Dam create the Upper Gauley (Class III to V+, minimum age 16) and Lower Gauley (Class III to V, minimum age 12-14) rafting season. 2026 release weekends per NPS: September 11-14, 18-21, 25-28, October 2-5, 9-12 and the final weekend of October 16-18 (sources differ on the last day). Tailwaters Campground closed September 11-28, 2026. No entrance fee; book commercial trips with a licensed outfitter.

Gauley Fest
American Whitewater's paddling festival during Gauley release season, drawing more than 5,000 paddlers. Campground opens noon Thursday; marketplace opens 5:00 PM Friday and 2:00 PM Saturday; no vehicles into the inner grounds after 7:00 PM Friday or Saturday; camping ends 11:00 AM Sunday. Reported 2026 admission $55 for the Friday package (Friday and Saturday camping plus entertainment), $45 for the Saturday package, age 15 and under free. The festival does not provide guided river trips.
Mount Hope Jubilee
35th annual jubilee in 2026. Friday from 5:00 PM with 9:00 PM fireworks; Saturday vendors 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, parade 10:00 AM and car show 11:00 AM-4:00 PM.
Beckley Half Marathon and 5K
Active Southern West Virginia road races starting and finishing at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. Half marathon 8:00 AM, 5K 8:30 AM. Children 12 and under run the 5K free; adult 5K pricing rose from $30 in spring to $50 on race day in 2026.
New River Gorge Wilds Trail Run
Marathon, half marathon and 5K on the ACE trails. Check-in 7:00 AM, race 9:00 AM, 5:30 PM cutoff. 2026 registration ranged from about $61.53 to $88.53 by distance and date.

Summer-season First Friday evenings with live music, artists and vendors paired with downtown businesses, food trucks and extended shop hours, in an art-walk format with Court Street open to traffic. 2026 dates included June 5, September 4 and October 2. Free.
NRG Bike Fest
Inaugural 2026 mountain-bike weekend with free group rides, skills clinics and races across the New River Gorge trail systems. Lead organizer, headquarters and fees to be confirmed; recurrence in 2027 not announced.
New River Gorge Enduro

Hinton Railroad Days

Taste of Bridge Day

Bridge Day
West Virginia's largest one-day festival on the third Saturday of October. Free admission, rain or shine. BASE jumping, rappelling and the highline from the bridge, 160-plus vendors on the closed highway, Into the Gorge bus rides ($75 plus tax, presold) and the Bridge Walk catwalk tour ($125). U.S. 19 closes 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM; park at a designated lot on your side of the gorge and take the $5 cash shuttle (buses start 8:30 AM). No pets, coolers, chairs, bicycles, drones or non-clear bags. Organized by the New River Gorge Bridge Day Commission and the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce.
Bridge Day 5K Run
Point-to-point 5K across the New River Gorge Bridge, starting just north of the bridge on the Route 19 northbound lanes and finishing at the courthouse. Limited to 600 runners; $65 through September 27, 2026, then higher. Run-only first mile at a 15-minute-per-mile pace; no strollers; minimum age eight. Packet pickup Friday 5:00-7:00 PM at the Memorial Building, 200 West Maple Avenue. Organized by Active Southern West Virginia; proceeds support Kids Run Clubs.
Bridge Day Chili Cook-off
16th annual cook-off in front of the courthouse as Bridge Day closes. Free admission and parking; tasting tickets sold on site; public voting, children's activities and live music by the Long Point String Band.

Fayetteville Halloween Trick-or-Treat and Court Street Trunk-or-Treat
Town trick-or-treat has historically run 6:00-8:00 PM with a Court Street trunk-or-treat 5:30-7:30 PM. October 31, 2026 falls on a Saturday and the town had not published final 2026 hours; confirm with Town Hall.

Fayetteville's Gingerbread Festival

New River Gorge Rim-to-Rim Race
Six-mile point-to-point road race from Fayette Station Road down about 1,300 feet and back up the other rim, with grades as steep as 20 percent. Check-in at the finish; buses carry runners to the start. Walkers allowed at a 20-minute-mile pace. Registration for the 2027 race opened August 31, 2026.

Cabin Fever 50K
Point-to-point winter trail ultramarathon from downtown Fayetteville to Hawks Nest State Park with a 7:00 PM cutoff and a free morning shuttle from the finish to the start. 2026 registration was $150 through November 5, 2025 and $175 through February 10, 2026. Fayetteville's Cryptid Weekend

Theatre West Virginia Summer Season
Outdoor drama in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve since 1961. The 2026 season ran June 19 to July 18 with the 65th-anniversary "Honey in the Rock" in repertory with "Shrek the Musical"; tickets $15 to $25. Performances begin at 8:15 PM. Umbrellas and tarps are not allowed; ponchos are. 2027 season to be announced.
Captain Thurmond's Challenge
32-mile adventure race combining about 16 miles of mountain biking, seven miles of Class IV whitewater and about nine miles of trail running through New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.
Fayetteville Heritage Festival and 4th of July Celebration
Two-day town festival with downtown activities, a parade, the Freedom 250 Soap Box Derby and fireworks at dusk on July 4 at Charlie McCoy Town Park. Organized by the Town of Fayetteville with Visit Fayetteville WV. Free.
West Virginia State Water Festival
Week-long City of Hinton festival on the New River; most activities free. The 2026 program included a downtown car show on August 1 and the first New River kayak race on August 2 ($10 entry).
Appalachian String Band Music Festival (Clifftop)
Five days of old-time string band contests, concerts, workshops, dances, vendors and rough camping run by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History. Pre-camping July 24-28, 2026; no arrival on the property or access road before 9:00 AM July 23; checkout by 1:00 PM August 2. Older published prices ($15 daily admission, $50 rough camping) are not confirmed for 2026.
Beckley Appalachian Festival
Week of Beckley events including Restaurant Week (August 3-8, 2026) and the 61st Appalachian Arts and Crafts Fair (August 7-8, 2026), organized by the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce.
State Fair of West Virginia
The 101st state fair in 2026. Gates 8:00 AM; rides 11:00 AM-11:00 PM. 2026 admission $10 in advance through August 3, $15 at the gate for ages 11 and up, free for 10 and under; Mega Pass $30 plus tax in advance or $35 at the fair, gate admission separate; grandstand concerts extra. Free general parking across U.S. 219 with shuttle. Lewisburg is somewhat more than an hour from Fayetteville.
Oak Leaf Festival
Week-long Labor Day tradition with a parade, music, vendors, pumpkin weigh-off, Jeep display, the George Harrah Memorial Car and Motorcycle Show, a chili cook-off and fireworks. In 2026 the car show was September 6 at 1:00 PM with fireworks at dusk. Free.
New River Rendezvous
Labor Day weekend gathering of paddling clubs hosted by the Carolina Canoe Club. Group meetings 10:00 AM Saturday and 9:00 AM Sunday and Monday; participants arrange river trips by water level and skill. Campground reservations by phone. This is the paddlers' event, not the former climbing festival of the same name. 2027 dates not yet published.

Planning around the big weekends
On Bridge Day, U.S. 19 and the bridge close to ordinary traffic from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Park at a designated lot on your side of the gorge and take the shuttle, which costs $5 in cash and starts at 8:30 AM. Pets, coolers, folding chairs, bicycles and drones are not allowed, and bags must be clear, apart from fanny packs and purses or clutches smaller than 5 by 7 inches. Admission is free, and the event goes ahead rain or shine. The Bridge Day guide has the full picture.
The National Park Service schedules Gauley season over six release weekends starting September 11, 2026, and sources differ on whether the last release day is October 17 or 18. The Upper Gauley runs Class III to V+ with a minimum age of 16. Book commercial trips with a licensed outfitter, and check river conditions before you go. Gauley Fest, American Whitewater's paddling festival, is at Nicholas County Veterans Memorial Park in Summersville from September 17 to 20, 2026.
