Getting to Fayetteville and the New River Gorge

By car, by plane or on a train that runs right through the gorge, plus the tolls, the road work and the map-app trap.

The drive in comes with a show: the last stretch into Fayetteville carries you straight across the New River Gorge Bridge on U.S. 19, the four-lane road that links I-79 to the north with I-64 and I-77 at Beckley, about 30 minutes south. Most people drive. Flyers land at Raleigh County Memorial near Beckley, the closest airport with scheduled flights, or at Charleston's Yeager, about an hour and a half away. Train fans can ride Amtrak's Cardinal through the gorge three days a week to Thurmond, Prince or Hinton, though you'll still need a car or a ride from the platform.

The Park Service puts highway access "from Route 19, between Beckley and Hico, and from I-64, between Mossy and Sandstone." Canyon Rim Visitor Center, where most first trips begin, sits about a mile north of town on the far side of the bridge. The park runs 53 miles end to end, so which end you're headed for matters more than how you reach the county.

How long is the drive to New River Gorge?

Pittsburgh, Columbus and Charlotte are all an easy half-day away, and Washington, DC is roughly five to six hours. The table gives two figures per city: the drive times Adventures on the Gorge publishes for its Lansing base, and a cautious mapped route to downtown Fayetteville that ignores traffic. Your real trip will usually land somewhere in between, so check a live map the morning you leave.

Outfitter estimates from Adventures on the Gorge (2020) and WV Tourism; mapped routes to downtown Fayetteville, September 2026.
From Main roads Outfitter estimate Mapped route, no traffic Turnpike plazas
Charleston, WV U.S. 60, WV 16 via Gauley Bridge and Ansted About 70 min to the park (WV Tourism) 51 mi, 1 h 19 min None on this route; the Turnpike alternative passes Chelyan and Pax

Raleigh, NC I-40, U.S. 52, I-77, U.S. 19 not listed 275 mi, 5 h 23 min Ghent

Staying in Beckley? It's 20 to 25 miles, about 30 minutes up U.S. 19. Farther out, Adventures on the Gorge lists Cleveland at 310 miles and 5 hours, Nashville at 450 miles and 6¾ hours, Atlanta at 470 miles and 7¼ hours, and New York at 520 miles and 8 hours. Long haul, but the gorge makes a fine reward at the end of it.

Do you pay tolls? The West Virginia Turnpike

Only if you come up I-77 from the south. The Turnpike runs from Princeton to Charleston with three mainline plazas (Ghent, Pax and Chelyan) and a side toll on Route 19 at the North Beckley exit. A car pays $4.50 per mainline plaza in cash or with an out-of-state E-ZPass, $2.93 with a West Virginia E-ZPass, and $13.50 cash for all three (the rate rose from $4.25 on January 1, 2025). Towing a trailer or driving a motor home, it's $5.50 a plaza, and $7.00 for a motor home pulling a trailer.

Coming from Charlotte, Raleigh or Roanoke, expect to pay at Ghent before you leave I-77 at Beckley for U.S. 19. Keep an E-ZPass handy if your exit uses the North Beckley side toll: it takes E-ZPass and Pay-By-Plate only, no cash, and charges a car $0.89. From Pittsburgh, Columbus, Cincinnati, Washington or Richmond you can reach Fayetteville without crossing a mainline plaza at all.

Road work and closures in fall 2026

U.S. 19 is getting fresh pavement from the New River Gorge Bridge to the Hico exit, the very stretch you'll drive every day of your trip. WV511 lists paving from mile marker 15.95 to 20.82 in both directions, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a 14-foot width limit, through June 30, 2027, plus night paving at WV 612 from September 11 to November 30, 2026. The work also adds three longer turn lanes. Budget a few extra minutes and you'll be fine.

Heading to Sandstone or Hinton from the west on I-64? The eastbound Exit 139 ramp has been closed since April 1 for the Sandstone Bridge rehab and is due to reopen in late October 2026. Until then, carry on about four miles to Exit 143 and double back westbound, a 10- to 12-minute detour by WVVA's estimate.

On Bridge Day, Saturday, October 17, 2026, U.S. 19 and the bridge close to traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and commercial through traffic gets sent to I-79 and I-64/77 from 5:30 a.m. The local detour, U.S. 60 through Ansted and WV 16, adds 30 to 45 minutes before any crowds. The easy fix: arrive the day before.

The August 15 and 16 flash floods also knocked out several roads inside the park. By September 3, Keeneys Creek Road to Nuttallburg had reopened, Brooklyn Campground was open and one lane of Cunard Road was open again. Check the NPS closures page before you go, and call ahead about Fayette Station Road.

Status as of September 22, 2026: Fayette Station Road was closed after the August 2026 flood, from Teays Landing to the two-way section, and no reopening has been announced. Call the park at 304-465-0508 before you drive it. Check the August 18 NPS closure notice (WOAY) before you go.

Why your map app can send you the wrong way

The Park Service doesn't mince words: "Third party mobile applications like Apple Maps and Google Maps may direct you to areas of the park that are rough in terrain and inaccessible and NOT a visitor center." Use the addresses and GPS points below instead, and load them before you lose signal, which in the gorge happens fast.

From the NPS directions page, September 2026.

For Grandview, take I-64 Exit 129 and follow Route 9 north for six miles. For Thurmond, leave U.S. 19 at the Glen Jean exit and wind seven miles down WV 25 to the river.

Closest airports to New River Gorge

Drive to downtown Fayetteville on a mapped route, no traffic; airlines and rental counters as listed by each airport, September 2026.
Airport Drive to town Airlines Rental cars
West Virginia International Yeager, Charleston (CRW) 54 mi, 1 h 27 min American Eagle, Breeze, Delta Connection, United Express Avis, Budget, Enterprise, National
Raleigh County Memorial, Beaver (BKW) 28 mi, 49 min Contour Airlines, to Charlotte Hertz, Enterprise
Greenbrier Valley, Lewisburg (LWB) 59 mi, 1 h 25 min Check the airport's site Enterprise, weekdays only
Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional (ROA) 134 mi, 2 h 53 min Check the airport's site Check the airport's site
Pittsburgh International (PIT) 222 mi, 4 h 21 min many eight companies
Charlotte Douglas International (CLT) 235 mi, 4 h 35 min many; also the Contour hub for BKW eight companies

For most flyers, Charleston is the smart pick: four airlines and a 54-mile drive to downtown Fayetteville. Its rental counters keep Saturday hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., so reserve a car ahead if you land late on a Saturday. Uber, Lyft and Link run around the clock.

Beckley's airport is closer, with free long-term parking and Hertz and Enterprise in the terminal. Its one carrier, Contour, holds the federal Essential Air Service contract through September 30, 2029, with 12 round trips a week to Charlotte. Handy, but with one route a missed connection in Charlotte can leave you driving the 235 miles. At Lewisburg, the Enterprise counter is closed on weekends.

Taking Amtrak to New River Gorge

Here's the romantic option: the Cardinal, running between Chicago and New York by way of Washington, follows the New River along the bottom of the gorge. It stops in West Virginia on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays in both directions, according to Amtrak's timetable. A $500,000 federal award is a "first step toward restoring daily service," but for now it's still three days a week.

Amtrak Cardinal timetable (September 2026) and Amtrak station pages. Drive to town on a mapped route.
Station Eastbound (train 50) Westbound (train 51) What is there Drive to town
Thurmond (THN) 9:56 a.m. 7:39 p.m. Platform with shelter, no waiting room; an NPS "flag stop" 16.4 mi, 31 min
Prince (PRC) 10:18 a.m. 7:23 p.m. Station building with waiting room, unstaffed 23.1 mi, 44 min
Hinton (HIN) 10:50 a.m. 6:46 p.m. Station building with waiting room 49.7 mi, 1 h 08 min

Thurmond, a near-ghost town on the river, is the closest station by road, but it's a flag stop with no waiting room, so call Amtrak before you plan on boarding there. Prince has a proper station building, and Amtrak is putting $4.5 million into accessibility work there through summer 2027. Fares vary by date, so price your trip on Amtrak's site.

Line up your ride before you board. The westbound train reaches Prince at 7:23 p.m., after most outfitter offices close, and WV Tourism says "A rental car or taxi is necessary to get to the park." None of the stations has a rental counter nearby. Hills to Hills Tours and Shuttle (304-640-8122) does Amtrak pick-ups and drop-offs, Thurmond included; call for a price. From Richmond, a Thruway motorcoach meets the westbound train at Charlottesville on the same three days.

Getting around without a car

You can do it, but a car makes life much easier. Trailheads, river put-ins and the southern park units all sit on separate roads. The NPS says "Taxi services are based in Oak Hill and Beckley," and Greyhound stops in Beckley. Uber covers Fayetteville, though it warns that "Pickup times in Fayetteville may be longer than in larger cities," so don't count on a quick ride from a trailhead.

Two public options help on a night out or a budget. The New River Gorge Shuttle loops between lodgings and businesses in Fayetteville from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, April 20 to October 20, for $2.50 a ride in cash; confirm it's running before you rely on it. Mountain Transit Authority's Route 11 runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from Montgomery to the Fayetteville Walmart via Gauley Bridge and Ansted, with fares from $0.50 to $3.00 (dispatch 304-872-5872).

Good to know before you drive in

RVs and trailers

Fayette Station Road is an eight-mile, mostly one-way loop that takes 30 to 45 minutes, and "vehicles over 12 feet in height cannot complete the tour," so leave the RV or trailer behind for that one. Canyon Rim has RV and bus parking, but the Long Point and Endless Wall lots fill on summer and fall weekends and take no RVs.

Arriving after dark

One quirk catches newcomers: fast U.S. 19 bypasses downtown, and even the town's own plan admits "Fayetteville's lack of a gateway remains an issue." Coming from the north, you cross the bridge first and can sail right past town. Save your lodging address and door code offline, and see the rules, safety and services guide for cell coverage, fuel and groceries.

Route sorted? Now the fun part: pick where you'll wake up. The where to stay guide weighs Fayetteville against Lansing, Oak Hill and Beckley, and best time to visit flags the weekends when the roads get busy.

A long drive that ends after dark on winding roads goes a lot better with the bed already booked. The live map shows places to stay around Fayetteville with prices for your dates.
