Nature in the New River Gorge

Waterfalls, fall color, ancient rock and the animals that live here, plus how to enjoy all of it safely.

The New River Gorge is the deepest and longest gorge in the Appalachians, according to the Park Service's Geodiversity Atlas, and you feel it the moment you stand at the rim. From Grandview's Main Overlook the river is 1,400 feet down. Down at water level, Sandstone Falls stretches 1,500 feet across the river, the biggest waterfall on the New.

The guides below cover what most visitors come looking for: waterfalls you can walk to, when the leaves turn (usually mid-October into early November, so right about now is the time to plan), the story of a river that geologists still argue over, and the snakes, bears and ticks you might meet on the trail. The river's age alone runs "from 3 million years to 320 million years" by the Park Service's count, and the state's geological survey has its doubts about that famous "second oldest river" line.

One rule before you head for the water: the park has no designated swim areas or beaches, per its 2026 compendium, and the water-safety page is blunt that "Most drownings in the New River involve people who didn't plan on being in the water." Enjoy the river from the rocks unless you're geared up for it.

The gorge's year in nature

  • Late April to mid-October: timber rattlesnakes are out and about, so watch your step.
  • Late April to mid-June, then mid-September to late October: the park's climbing seasons.
  • Around the third week of May: Catawba rhododendron blooms pink and purple at Grandview's Main Overlook.
  • Mid-August: the state's fall foliage projection map comes out (August 19 in 2026), with weekly updates from mid-September.
  • From September 26, 2026: deer and bear archery in the preserve areas, so a bit of blaze orange on the trail is smart.
  • Mid to late October 2026: the gorge's expected color peak, with Bridge Day on October 17.
  • November to March: Cunard Road closed below the Brooklyn Mine Trail.

Road closures after the August 2026 flood

Status as of September 22, 2026: The August 15 and 16 flash floods closed some river-level roads. Fayette Station Road was closed from Teays Landing to the two-way section, and Glade Creek Road beyond the Grandview Sandbar campground; no reopening had been announced as of September 22. Cunard Road is open, with one-lane stretches. Check the NPS closures page before you go.

The Glade Creek closure is the one that hits nature lovers hardest, since it cuts off the Glade Creek waterfalls and the Glade Creek Trail. The trails hub keeps the full closure list, and park-wide rules are on rules, safety and services.

Coming soon

A guide to swimming and river access is on the way, followed by wildflowers and birding. Until then, keep exploring at Grandview, Hawks Nest State Park, Summersville Lake and the history section.
