Freefolk is the Fayetteville brewery that got too big for downtown, so now you drink it at the source: a taproom inside the brewhouse at 25385 Midland Trail in Hico, about 9 miles north of town across the New River Gorge Bridge. Pours include Fayetteville Fog IPA, Island in the Sky and Soul Sister Sour. The taproom is open Thursday 4 to 9 PM, Friday 4 to 10 PM, Saturday 1 to 10 PM and Sunday 2 to 8 PM, and the brewery's Untappd listing adds Monday from 4 to 9 PM. It's closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
Don't go looking for it on Court Street. The old taproom at 1690 Court Street is now La Bolilla, a Salvadoran and Mexican pupuseria, according to Visit Fayetteville and the New River Gorge CVB. A few listings, including the state tourism site, still show the old address and phone, so set your map to Hico.
The story behind Freefolk
Husband and wife Jeff and Sarah Edwards own Freefolk, and they opened it downtown with co-founder Jamie Lester, a West Virginia artist, according to the brewery's website. They started on a tiny 3.5-barrel brewhouse and jumped to a 20-barrel system in the fall of 2022, when all the brewing moved to Hico. WOAY covered the move at the time, when the plan was to keep the downtown taproom going too. Today everything happens in Hico.
What's on tap at Freefolk
The tap list lives on Untappd, and in late September 2026 it carried Fayetteville Fog IPA, Island in the Sky, Soul Sister Sour, Dub Vienna Lager, Appalachian Light and a seasonal Folktober Fest, plus a seltzer and non-alcoholic cans for the driver. Folktober Fest is the one to catch on a fall trip.
Food is worth a quick call. Untappd lists Freefolk as a brewery and pizza place that serves food, but the brewery doesn't say whether the pizza comes from its own kitchen or a truck. The same listing tags outdoor seating and marks the place pet friendly and child friendly. Those are listing tags rather than a posted policy, so ask before you walk a dog inside.
How to get to Freefolk from Fayetteville
Hico sits on the Midland Trail (U.S. 60), across the bridge from town, so Freefolk makes the most sense at the end of a day on the north side of the gorge or on a drive along the Midland Trail toward Ansted and Hawks Nest. Pair it with the Endless Wall trail: a 2023 Hikes and Hops post strings the hike and a Freefolk pint together, written when the taproom was still downtown. It's a drive either way, so pick a designated driver, or book a room or a cabin on the north side of the bridge and keep the drive short.
Live music and private events
Freefolk has hosted Fourth Fridays live music nights, including one on August 28, 2026, on the Visit Fayetteville calendar. To see who's playing during your trip, call 304-658-6005, the number the CVB and Untappd both list. The brewery also books private tours, tastings and space rentals through a request form on its website. This guide doesn't link that site: when checked on September 22, 2026, its pages carried hidden links to unrelated pharmacy and casino sites.
