The best time to visit the New River Gorge

Blazing Octobers, warm-water summers, quiet springs and snowy overlooks. Pick your season.

Late September through October is the gorge at its best: the hillsides turn red and gold, the Gauley roars with its famous fall releases, climbers get their favorite weather and Bridge Day fills the whole town with a festival. It's also the hardest time to find a bed, so book early. Come June through August for warm-water rafting with every visitor center open, or April, May and early November for quiet trails.

You won't be alone in summer. July is traditionally the park's busiest month, with June or October close behind, WV MetroNews reported, and each summer month has topped 200,000 visits in strong years while winter months stay under 100,000. The park drew a record 1,811,937 visits in 2024, and 2025 beat it.

New River Gorge in October: worth the crowds?

Yes, as long as you book early and expect some traffic. Fall stacks the gorge's best moments into a few weeks. The Army Corps releases water from Summersville Dam on six Gauley weekends, September 11 to October 18 in 2026, the big-water releases that made the Gauley famous (the Gauley season guide has the hours). Climbers get their second season from mid-September to late October, which one climbing coach calls "definitely the best season." And on the third Saturday, October 17 in 2026, Bridge Day closes U.S. 19, sends BASE jumpers off the bridge and brings the busiest lodging weekend of the year.

Then there's the color. Expect the gorge to glow from about mid-October to early November, with the New River Gorge, Babcock and Fayetteville typically peaking mid to late October and the state parks along the river often around the second week. Here's a trick: the rim turns first, and the trees hundreds of feet below along the river can hold their color after the overlooks fade, so you get two shots at it. The state's weekly Live Leaf Map tracks the change, and the fall foliage guide tells you where to look.

A few October details to plan around. The Grandview Visitor Center closes for the season after October 25, 2026, and the Thurmond depot opens weekends only until then. Nights get crisp, too: Oak Hill's median first freeze is October 19, so pack a warm layer. The preserve is open to hunting, with deer archery from September 26 and youth deer and bear hunts on Bridge Day weekend, October 17 and 18 (WVDNR 2026-27 summary). Check the NPS hunting maps and wear blaze orange, which the park recommends for climbers during hunting season.

October is the month to book first. See what's still open for Bridge Day weekend, or open the map and try any other fall dates.

Summer: warm water and long evenings

Summer is splash season. From Memorial Day to Labor Day all four visitor centers are open and rangers lead programs every day, including a 10 a.m. patio talk at Canyon Rim and an 11 a.m. walk through Thurmond. The Upper New's gentler rapids run "May - October" at ACE and River Expeditions, and several outfitters let kids 6 to 11 ride free with a paying adult except on Saturdays. On summer evenings, Theatre West Virginia stages outdoor dramas at Grandview (June 19 to July 18 in 2026).

The plateau stays pleasantly mild: Oak Hill sees 90°F on only about 2.4 days a year, though down near the river at Hawks Nest it's closer to 11. June is the wettest month, at 5.55 inches, and the park warns that mountain weather "can change quickly," so hike in the morning and keep an eye out for afternoon storms. The Long Point and Endless Wall lots fill on summer and fall weekends; go early or on a weekday.

Spring: the quiet window

April and May belong to hikers and climbers who like elbow room. The first climbing season runs from "late April to mid-June," the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine reopens April 1, and Babcock's campground opens on the third Friday in April. Bring a warm sleeping bag: Oak Hill's median last freeze is April 21, and one year in ten it comes as late as May 13. Grandview and Thurmond stay closed until Memorial Day.

Is New River Gorge worth visiting in winter?

For overlooks and empty trails, yes; for rafting, no. Picture the bridge's steel arch against a snowy gorge with hardly anyone else on the deck. Canyon Rim and Sandstone stay open daily year-round except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Beckley averages 55.9 inches of snow a year, most of it in January (15.5) and February (15.2), so pack for real winter. Cunard Road closes below the Brooklyn Mine Trail parking from November through March, and New River Mountain Guides takes a break from half-day climbs December to February. Town keeps things lively with Wizard Weekend in January and the Gingerbread Festival in December. Shop and restaurant hours shift in the off-season, so check before you drive.

A few timing tips

Bridge Day is at the mercy of the weather. A National Weather Service briefing on the event notes that jumping "may be shut down if sustained > 15 mph" winds, and mid-October is "near end of valley fog season," which it sums up for the jumpers as "can't see, can't jump!" On October 16, 2004, the event saw thunderstorms with hail and gusts estimated at 40 to 45 mph. Pack a rain shell and a sense of humor.

The river has moods of its own, so check the river conditions page before any trip that depends on the water. And whatever month you pick, on October weekends book the bed before the activity. The where to stay guide compares the towns, and the live map shows what's still open for your dates.
