Fayetteville, WV and the New River Gorge

Fayetteville, the Fayette County seat since 1837 and home to about 2,800 people by the town's own count, sits on the plateau just south of the New River Gorge Bridge. The gorge itself is New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, 53 miles of river and more than 70,000 acres that became the 63rd national park under a law signed December 27, 2020, and the Park Service charges no entrance fee to visit.

What's changing

Five scheduled changes, latest date first.

  1. November 19, 2026, scheduled

    The weekday closure on the Kaymoor Miners Trail is set to end, according to the NPS closures page. The trail's own NPS page gives November 14.

    Cunard Road closes below the Brooklyn Mine Trail for the winter. NPS says repairs continue through 2027.

    Thurmond Depot Visitor Center closes for the season, and the NPS lists it closed to May 26, 2027.

    Grandview Visitor Center closes and stays shut through May 27, 2027, but the outdoor area at Grandview is open all year. Other NPS pages give different seasons for the building; these dates come from the NPS Data API.

    Bridge Day runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and U.S. 19 is closed to traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gauley season, whose releases start September 11, ends that weekend too, though the last release dates differ by source: October 16 and 17 in West Virginia Explorer's calendar, October 17 and 18 on the NPS Gauley page.

Status as of September 8, 2026: Flash flooding on August 16 washed out Nuttallburg Road and blocked or closed stretches of Fayette Station, Cunard and Glade Creek roads. Three days later Nuttallburg Road was reported closed indefinitely pending state highway repairs, and this page has no confirmed reopening date for the others. Check the NPS closures page before you go.

U.S. 19 is a work zone as well. Resurfacing from the bridge to Hico began March 30, 2026 and is scheduled to last through at least June 2027, and WV511 lists a 14-foot width limit on the paving stretch between mile markers 15.95 and 20.82.

Bridge Day

Free and rain or shine, on the third Saturday in October. The Park Service says it is the one day the public can walk on the bridge deck.

NPS says the lots at both Endless Wall trailheads fill on summer and fall weekends. Neither takes RVs.

The visitor center, about a mile north of town across the bridge, is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (304-574-2115). A ramp reaches the boardwalk's upper deck; the lower deck is 178 steps down.

The town's 2024 plan says the parking shortage has worsened with visitation, and it calls parking on Court Street "particularly troublesome."

State tourism puts peak color at mid-October to early November; its 2026 foliage map updates weekly from mid-September.

Getting here

U.S. 19 is the four-lane highway over the bridge, and the town's 2024 comprehensive plan notes that it connects to I-79, I-77 and I-64 but bypasses downtown.

Without a car, the options are thin. The Park Service lists a Greyhound terminal in Beckley and taxis based in Oak Hill and Beckley, and Amtrak's Cardinal stops at Hinton and Prince three days a week. Treat phone directions near the park with suspicion: NPS warns that Apple and Google Maps "may direct you to areas of the park that are rough in terrain and inaccessible."

Best time to visit

July has traditionally been the park's busiest month, with June or October next, according to a May 2025 WV MetroNews report.

The count for 2025 is murkier. The Park Service called it a record year but printed no total for this park in its release, and a secondary republish of NPS statistics puts the figure near 1.96 million recreation visits, which count entries rather than people.

The NPS climbing page gives climbers two seasons: late April to mid-June, and mid-September to late October.

Where to stay

The Park Service names Hinton, Fayetteville and Beckley as its gateway towns for lodging and services. In town, Hill Hall Hotel opened August 28, 2026 in the former school at 135 High Street, with 40 rooms from $225.

Book Bridge Day weekend first. The Fayetteville CVB has called it the town's highest-occupancy lodging weekend, and a tourism representative said that in 2017 rooms sold out as far away as Wheeling.

Camping

The Park Service's primitive campgrounds are free and first-come, first-served, and none of them has drinking water.

Check for closures before picking a site. A mudslide on August 11 closed Glade Creek Road past the Grandview Sandbar and shut Glade Creek Campground with it. On the Gauley, the NPS letter to boaters lists Tailwaters Campground as closed September 11 to 28. The Outpost campground on Fayette Station Road closed on August 20 after flood damage and reopened fully on September 4, a week after a partial reopening.
